Canada Day started with patchy fog and a light drizzle and a balmy 8C. We were glad we had the nice weather for our island tour yesterday. Our next destination was Crow Head (near Twillingate) and involved another ferry ride.
The ferry ride was much smoother than the drive. The roads in this part of the province are littered with potholes requiring nimble darting from side to side of your driving lane. Too bad it was so overcast and foggy as the scenery would have been great.
We arrived in Twillingate at around noon and stopped at a waterfront restaurant for lunch. This is the first place where we have encountered tour busses. It was still cold and drizzly so we needed to kill some time before arriving at our rental house in Crow Head so went to check out the Auk Winery.
The climate is not conducive to grape growing but they have lots of different berries and this winery makes various fruit wines with cute names.
We tasted several and found them somewhat "interesting". Instead of icewine, they have iceberg wine, made with the water from real icebergs.
We asked the lady at the winery where we could spend a bit more time indoors in town and her number one suggestion was the local museum which featured a polar bear that had been shot by the RCMP in town a few years ago. Wow!
Given the weather, the iceberg tours and whale watching were not on our radar although we did see some groups heading out but they would have been cold and wet.
We drove to Crow Head and walked out to the point for a view of the village. We also saw a whale offshore a ways. I couldn't tell what kind it was.
Next we visited the lighthouse but it was windy and cold so we didn't spend much time there.
At about 2:30, we arrived at our rental house and were able to check in.
It was just too nasty to go out and explore so we turned on the TV and watched the Blue Jay Canada Day game. It looked a lot warmer there! For supper, we went to a local dinner theatre. Local music and skits and lots of Newfoundland humour.
