Today's trek was from Bonavista to Gander, aka "The Crossroads of the World". More on that later.
It was 7C when we woke up this morning and we took our time getting underway from our apartment in town. After doing a few loads of laundry last night, things had to get sorted and repacked for the next leg of the journey. The apartment worked out well and it was good to just hang around for the evening and relax.
We had not really explored the town of Bonavista so we decided to drive around and see what was there before we left. It is one of the larger towns in Bonavista peninsula (population 3,500) and we were expecting to see some sort of downtown commercial core with a few stores and restaurants. Despite driving down most of what appeared to be main streets, none of which meet at a right angle, we did not detect any sort of commercial district. Just one strip mall with a Foodland grocery and drug store. Very few restaurants. Not sure where people shop here.
The harbour was a fair size and colourful.
The fog was rolling in and out and made for some interesting views.
We also visited the Dungeons Provincial Park which had some seaside caves that are interesting when there are some waves rolling in from the sea. None of that was happening today, this side of the peninsula was cloaked in fog.
We travelled along the Discovery Trail to Terra Nova National Park. The little villages we passed through would have been very pretty if they were not cloaked in fog. When we got to Terra Nova, we stopped for a hike on the Ochre Hill Trail.
Not a long hike (about 5 km), passing by a couple of ponds and through some boggy areas before climbing a granite mound for a 360 degree vista of the area.
Very interesting vegetation with lots of moss and black spruce. I was expecting to maybe see a moose but the only critter sighted was a squirrel.
We drove to the north end of the park and did another short scramble up a granite mound for another vista of the Traytown area.
From here, it was off to Gander and a stay in a motel for the night. We got upgraded to an "executive king suite" and it was very comfortable. Supper time and we starting searching for a restaurant on Trip Advisor and Yelp. This may be the "Crossroads of the World" but the chefs must have passed right through. A few low end chain restaurants but not much else. We settled for Jungle Jim's bar/restaurant next door. Jungle Jim's was #1 on Yelp! What could be bad about that. Cold beer and a good burger and salad.
Early rise tomorrow to catch the ferry to Fogo Island.
