Exploring Fogo Island

There was some patchy fog when we awoke this morning but the forecast had it dissipating as the day progressed. This was our only full day on the island so we embarked on a quest to see as much as possible. We drove as far east as possible to the little town of Tilting and then worked our way back to Fogo.

Tilting Harbour is surrounded by small clapboard homes, some old, some new. Just about everyone on the water has a crib dock and shed in various states of decay. There are a fair number of vacation rentals here but absolutely no sign of any restaurants. Lots of nice photo opportunities and  really liked collecting photos of sheds.

We did a short walk to see one of the ultra-modern "artist-in-residence" buildings on Fogo Island. Very interesting architecture.

Heading back toward Fogo, we stopped at Joe Batt's Arm.

There is a nice seaside walking trail there.

We encountered another of the artist-in-residence building a short way down the trail.

Continuing on, we were rewarded with beautiful seaside views.

At the end of the trail, was a giant Auk statue commemorating a now extinct bird that inhabited the island.

After the hike, we poked around the harbour and took in the scenery.

As we were leaving Joe Batt's Arm, we stopped for a close up view of the Fogo Island Inn, a very exclusive resort with some interesting architecture.

We stopped for some Partridgeberry Tart ice cream along the way. Never had that flavour before!

There was anothe artist-in-residence building in Shoal Bay and we walked down the 1/2 km boardwalk to take a look.

When we returned to Fogo we drove up the hill to see the Marconi Wireless Museum. Some interesting equipment from the early 1900's when they had a transmitter here to relay telegraphs to ships at sea.

There was a nice overlook of the town of Fogo.

Time to relax and look out over the bay and have glass of wine before venturing off to the Beaches Bar and Grill for a cod dinner.

The sky stayed mostly clear tonight so it was time to get some sunset photos.
