We departed St John's and made our way to the Baccalieu Trail which follows the coast of the north-west arm of the Avalon Peninsula. A nice sunny day!
We did some quick stops at Holyrood.... a nice harbour with pleasure boats.
Brigus.... home of Captain Bartlett who captained Perry's ship that made the expedition to the North Pole. He had a tunnel built to his deep water wharf.
The rest of the town is very pretty....
Cupids....
Harbour Grace.... where Amelia Airheart took off from for her solo trans-Atlantic flight
Salmon Cove....
Adam's Cove.... another iceberg sighting
Grates Cove.... the top end of the peninsula.
On the far side of the bay is an area of rock walls that were constructed by the early settlers to contain soil for small vegetable gardens. A designated National Historic Site
Brownsdale Cove.... another iceberg
At Winterton Cove we toured the Wooden Boat Museum. A very good tour. You can book a two week workshop and build your own dory!
Our final stop of the day was in Heart's Content to do a very quick tour of the site of the first Trans-Atlantic cable terminal. This facility was operational from 1866 to 1965.
And that's what is left of this end of the obsolete cable.
We drove back to Carbonear and checked into our B&B which also had a fine dining restaurant. This is an overview of Carbonear, a reasonable size community.
We had a very nice meal and an early evening to get caught up on our rest after a busy day.
