Travelling to Gros Morne National Park and Rocky Harbour

The weather was ugly when we awoke this morning, high wind, cold and rain. The temperature was 7C, "feels like 2C".

We took our time packing up and loading the SUV for today's drive to Rocky Harbour and Gros Morne National Park.

The rain varied from steady to misty all the way until we got to Deer Lake. A whole bunch of the same scenery; spruce trees, birch trees, bog, ponds and lakes viewed through the windshield wipers. After watching the scenery for several hours, I having a hard time understanding why Niagara-on-the-Lake requires a permit to cut down a small tree. They have billions here although I hear that a lot of locals are converting from electric heat to wood fuel due to the anticipated steep increase in electrical power costs when the Muskrat Falls Hydroelectric Project comes on-line. One person I talked to said it was near impossible to buy a wood stove anywhere on the island, the demand is so high. We have noticed a lot of significant wood piles at residences.

We stopped in Deer Lake to pick up some groceries the last town with any kind of significant shopping before Rocky Harbour. On our way into the park, we noticed there is still snow in some of the higher elevations which are not really that high! That's right, those white spots are snow on July 2! We saw a lot more in the tablelands area but I didn't stop to capture a photo.

As we approached Rocky harbour it started to rain again and looks like it will be with us for the whole evening.

It's supposed to improve tomorrow.

On the brighter side, the cottage is great. Brand new, two bedrooms with all of the amenities. I have some movies downloaded that we can watch on the TV tonight. And we have food so we don't have to go out in the rain to eat tonight! Time to open an Iceberg
